Spiced Rum Old-Fashioned

Ingredients
- 1 (2-inch) strip orange rind
- 1 teaspoon Spiced Simple Syrup (recipe follows), or more to taste
- 1½ ounces aged rum
- 2 dashes bitters
- Garnish: maraschino cherry
SPICED SIMPLE SYRUP
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon whole cloves
- ½ teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 vanilla bean
- 1 star anise pod
- 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions
- In an old-fashioned glass, muddle rind in Spiced Simple Syrup. Add rum and bitters; stir well. Add ice. Garnish with a cherry, if desired.
SPICED SIMPLE SYRUP
- In a small saucepan, bring sugar and 1 cup water to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Add cloves and all remaining ingredients; reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding solids. Refrigerate in an airtight container.
