Spiced Rum Old-Fashioned

Ingredients
  • 1 (2-inch) strip orange rind
  • 1 teaspoon Spiced Simple Syrup (recipe follows), or more to taste
  • 1½ ounces aged rum
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • Garnish: maraschino cherry
SPICED SIMPLE SYRUP
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ teaspoon whole cloves
  • ½ teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions

  1. In an old-fashioned glass, muddle rind in Spiced Simple Syrup. Add rum and bitters; stir well. Add ice. Garnish with a cherry, if desired.
SPICED SIMPLE SYRUP
  1. In a small saucepan, bring sugar and 1 cup water to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Add cloves and all remaining ingredients; reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding solids. Refrigerate in an airtight container.
