Sumter House Cocktail

This smooth and spicy tipple from the Baton Rouge cocktail house Olive or Twist will keep the party going after your mid-afternoon crawfish boils. Named after Baton Rouge’s popular 1860s hotel, this cocktail will only get better with age.

Ingredients
  1. 2 1/2 ounces rye whiskey, such as Templeton Rye
  2. 1 ounce Italian vermouth, such as Carpano Antica
  3. 1/2 ounce vanilla syrup, such as Giffard Vanille de Madagascar
  4. 1/2 ounce Spiced Cinnamon Syrup, recipe follows
  5. 1 dash Angostura bitters
  6. Garnish: orange peel
Instructions
  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, and add whiskey, vermouth, vanilla syrup, Spiced Cinnamon Syrup, and bitters. Stir until very cold, 15 to 20 seconds. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange peel, if desired.

Spiced Cinnamon Syrup

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 cup sugar
  2. 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  3. 1 cup water
  4. 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  5. 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugars, 1 cup water, cinnamon, and cayenne. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until sugars are dissolved. Remove from heat, and let stand 10 minutes. Let cool completely before using. Cover, and refrigerate up to 1 month.
